How to observe

There are many ways to do classroom observation. Some are very different from others. Perhaps the greatest divergence is between structured and unstructured approaches.

Highly structured approaches are used to focus on the frequency, duration and intensity of certain behaviours to the exclusion of all else, whereas unstructured observations try to paint a broader picture in order to include as many cues and clues as possible which, hopefully, will make it easier to understand what is going on. One type is not better than the other. What is important is that there is an appropriate match between the type and the aims of the observation.

Overall we favour the unstructured approach to classroom observation because it is teacher-friendly and inclusive by which we mean that, if it is done properly, the data will include cues or clues that otherwise might be missed and that have proved to be extremely useful.
